1hr 50min artist workshop for KS1 - 5

Exploring Barbara Hepworth’s inspiration of the landscape, students will be taken through the exciting printmaking process. Creating drawings in the galleries students will use these to inform their own collograph prints.

Session overview

Exploring Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures and the inspiration behind them, pupils will discover new ways of observing and drawing artworks through artist-led activities in the galleries.

They will create a series of drawings to gather ideas from the lines, shapes, forms and textures in Hepworth’s sculptures. Primary pupils will use their individual drawings to form a layered drawing that they can look through, while secondary pupils will also explore abstraction and create simple sketchbooks to hold their drawings.

These drawings will inform their printmaking in the learning studios, with pupils bringing together their creative ideas to produce their own prints. Artists will take them through the printmaking process to create collograph plates and take exciting prints from these. Secondary pupils will also learn how to use our printmaking presses to create their final outcomes.

Take back to school

Pupils will each create a layered artwork using their drawings from the galleries and a number of collagraph prints. When you return to school we recommend you lay the prints out to dry.

This workshop inspires and challenges pupils to experiment with new materials and create their own works of art. They are encouraged to think critically about the art they experience in the galleries, developing their visual language.
