Felt making
1hr 50min artist-led workshop for KS1 – KS3
Students will create expressive, colourful felted fabric, using inspiration from the artworks in the gallery.
Session overview
Through a series of exciting looking and drawing activities in the galleries, pupils will explore Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures on display.
Discovering links to the landscape they will also use natural objects and textiles to create temporary collaborative drawings, developing an understanding of how textiles are made and the links with local textiles heritage.
In our learning studios, pupils will explore the felt making process, transforming and fusing merino wool by hand. Using their drawings from the galleries as inspiration pupils will create expressive felted fabric that explores colour, line and composition.
Take back to school
Pupils will have a series of drawings from the galleries, and felted fabric they designed and made.
For KS1: Pupils will create individual 3D felted pebbles and then collaborate to create temporary mini-landscapes that they place their felted works in.
For KS2 & 3: Pupils will work together in groups to create textiles designs inspired by the landscape that they then collaboratively felt into 2D pieces.
Back at school we recommend you lay the felt out to dry.
