Schools & Colleges: Sculpture and the Landscape Study Day

Tue 14 Nov, 10am - 2.15pm, FREE

Suitable for KS4/ Years 10-11/ Level 2

Join artist Sarah Jane Palmer for our practical, process driven study day. Explore how landscape has inspired artists and experiment with materials to create both individual and collaborative plaster sculptures.

Students will spend time in the gallery exploring our exhibition Magic in our Country: Hepworth, Moore and the Land through a series of looking and drawing activities. They will develop their understanding of how the land has influenced artists’ work, and how they use texture, organic forms and negative space within their work.

Returning to the studios students will experiment with materials , using clay and plaster to create individual bas relief sculptures inspired by their investigations of the artworks in the gallery.

After lunch they will work in groups to create large-scale sculptures using wire, mesh and Modroc plaster. They will then curate an installation of their artworks, reflecting on their learnings from the study day.
